Frequently Asked Questions

Where can the SPA methodology be applied?

Our successful SPA contributions have been in engineering, construction, electric utility, healthcare and information technology.  However, the tools and techniques we use can be applied in most industries.

How long does it take to complete an Assessment, Gap Analysis, and Remediation Plan?

The timeframe depends on a lot of factors including size, complexity, level of engagement, level of maturity, etc.  In the past assessment reports have taken in the range of from 1-3 months.  Implementation depends on what is needed, and can take 1-year or more.

What are next steps for us after we've completed an SPA analysis?

We’ll use the remediation plan to develop a strategic roadmap and a detailed implementation action plan.  SPA can provide implementation oversight, directional steering, regular sponsor communication, and standard templates and processes.  Then we’ll make sure improvements can be sustained by tracking improvement performance metrics.

Will SPA need to be on-site?

On-site interviews are generally more accurate and productive.  However, the entire assessment process can be conducted remotely via videoconferencing, phone calls, IM, a collaboration site, and e-mail.

What will SPA need from us?

A part-time, single point of contact for interview scheduling, document repository access, and to direct SPA to in-house resources who can provide operational explanations.  SPA also needs to understand from senior management what the issues are that drove a decision to seek outside advice, and what the long-term desired outcomes are.

Can SPA provide ongoing support after the final report?

Yes.  SPA will provide clarifications, respond to questions and provide incidental support at no additional cost.  We don’t quibble and our primary goal is for you to be successful.

What is the validity of the SPA approach?

The SPA approach is grounded in PMI’s PMBOK, AACEI’s Total Cost Management Framework, and ASPE’s Standard Estimating Practice.  It is also a product of hundreds of project completions in complex environments throughout the U.S.

What is the SPA pricing model?

We normally quote a time & materials hourly rate so that the total cost depends on the services requested, and then the number of hours needed to deliver.

Does SPA provide tools and templates we'll need for implementation?

Yes.  The most value-adding recommendations are typically around processes, governance, and people.  However, SPA can provide templates for specific project management areas as-needed.
